AI headlines for business this week (Jan 1, 2027)

CIOs ship Q1 agent roadmaps with kill criteria, procurement bakes security questionnaires into RFPs, ops tests agent memory backups, legal refreshes AI use policies, and support caps demo agents away from prod data.

First week of the year and teams are done with vision decks. They want a Q1 plan with owners, dates, and a clear answer for what happens when a pilot does not earn its keep.

Last week's transcripts, year-end spend, and pilot retirement headlines closed the books. This week is about how you start January without dragging December's experiments into production by accident.

1. CIOs publish Q1 agent roadmaps with explicit kill criteria

IT steering packs list three to five agent bets for Q1, each with success metrics, budget cap, and a retire date if targets miss. No more "extend the pilot" without a written decision.

Why it matters for business: roadmaps without kill rules become sprawl by April. Read the deep dive on kill criteria on Q1 roadmaps and board-level sprawl.

2. Procurement embeds agent security questionnaires in standard RFPs

Legal and InfoSec add a fixed agent appendix to SaaS and services RFPs: subprocessors, data residency, tool permissions, audit logs, and incident notification SLAs.

Why it matters for business: you stop reinventing the questionnaire on every deal. Reuse MCP gateway checks and subprocessors lists.

3. Ops runs January failover tests on agent memory and logs

Platform teams restore conversation memory and tool audit logs from backup into an isolated environment and prove agents can resume with correct context after a region outage.

Why it matters for business: backups you never test are folklore. Pair with transcript retention and incident playbooks.

4. Legal refreshes acceptable-use policies for employee agents

HR and legal publish an updated AI use policy covering personal accounts, customer data in prompts, and which tools are approved for which roles after holiday shadow IT experiments.

Why it matters for business: January is when people try new toys on real spreadsheets. Align with control plane thinking and detection gaps.

5. Sales and solutions cap demo agents away from production data

Revenue teams standardize synthetic fixtures for demos and block connectors to prod CRM or billing in presales environments. SE leaders audit five random demos per month.

Why it matters for business: the fastest way to leak a customer list is a flashy demo. Mirror runtime sandboxes and eval gates before anything graduates from demo to pilot.

What I would do this week

  • Write kill criteria for every agent line item on your Q1 plan.
  • Paste your agent security appendix into the next RFP template.
  • Schedule one memory restore drill and document the result.
  • Read the Q1 roadmap deep dive.
